Hi everyone,
Stumbled upon a striking black-and-white photo that really caught my eye—makes a fine addition to any archive.
Here’s what I see:
The star of the image is Yorkshire Woollen Leyland PS1 Rebody 596, clearly marked, beautifully preserved in its 1959 form, and operating Route 67 to Bradford. It’s parked at Cleckheaton Bus Station, giving it that local character and familiar atmosphere.
The PS1 bodywork—rebodied for enhanced comfort and updated aesthetic—stands out with its classic panel design, strong lines, and traditional livery. Even in black-and-white, you can sense the quality.
On one side of the frame are old wooden shelters—open-fronted waiting sheds with wood slats, pitched roofs, and time-earned character. Those shelters have likely witnessed thousands of stories.
Behind them, mature trees rise—bare-branched (perhaps it’s late autumn or winter), their silhouettes intricate against a pale sky. The trees and shelters together frame the bus, adding natural texture to the urban backdrop.
The overall mood: soft, moody, yet rich. The contrast between the smooth metal of the bus and the rough grain of wood; the organic lines of trees merging with the geometric strength of the station architecture.
A few questions this photo brings to mind:
Does anyone know when exactly the PS1 Rebody 596 entered service, or any registry/enrollment data for it—routes, notable performances, etc.?
Since this is Cleckheaton Bus Station—anyone recognize exactly where the shot is taken within the station? Are the shelters original to that layout, or temporary structures?
Any notion of what the interior might’ve been like after the rebody job—seat styles, trim, lighting? I’ve seen some references but never a firsthand description.
Curious about the shelters themselves—when they were built and when phased out, especially in Cleckheaton. Are there any photos for comparison over the years?
Always fascinating how a single frame like this brings together engineering, landscape, local identity, and a moment in time in Yorkshire’s transport history.
Keen to hear your thoughts and insights—if you’ve seen this bus in other pics, or recall stories about PS1 rebodies in the Yorkshire Woollen fleet, or just recognize that corner of Cleckheaton station.
Best,
Martin
