Yorkshire Woollen AEC Regent V (1959) — Route G to Dewsbury via Heckmondwike at Cleckheaton

Post by badwolf »

Hello all,

Found this sharp black-and-white photo that captures transport history in its purity. Wanted to share and dig into some of the finer details:

What’s in the shot:

The bus is a Yorkshire Woollen AEC Regent V, dated 1959, running Route G to Dewsbury via Heckmondwike.
Location is Cleckheaton Bus Station. You only really see the bus up close, with one of the bus stands directly behind it—clean, minimal backdrop, nothing else in shot to distract.

Why this image stands out:

The Regent V’s design is on full display—sleek upper-deck windows, dual headlights maybe peering ahead, bold signage with “G” and the route clearly spelled out.
The bus stand behind suggests a time when stations were simpler, functional: waiting areas or shelters maybe out of shot, but the layout appears uncluttered.
Stripped-down composition means the bus is the focus. You’re drawn to its proportions, the livery rippling (in that grainy contrast of B&W film), and the significance of route G, connecting towns and communities.

Questions and threads to pull:

Anyone know how long Route G ran via Heckmondwike to Dewsbury in that alignment? Did it shift over years, and when did route G begin or end?

Regarding the Regent V—what were its specifications in the Yorkshire Woollen fleet circa 1959? Seating layout, engine type, etc?
For those with a keen eye: can the specific model of bus stand (structure, signage – though behind) help date the station’s layout or work out which stand this was?

If anyone has photos that show the Regent V from other angles in or around Cleckheaton, would love to see them—especially those showing interior or route branding.
Always enjoy seeing those crisp historical folds—where transport meets daily life. Looking forward to any insights you might have!

Best,

Martin
